Advertising is one of the easiest, most common forms of monetization available online. Online advertising works much the same way as offline advertising: a content publisher, service provider, etc. devotes a portion of their real estate to promoting a third party’s products or services. In return, they receive revenue.
Online advertising differs, however, because it offers so many channels and creative methods of implementation. Advertising can appear as display advertisements on blogs, inside of apps, inside search results, inside software installers, in social media, as editorial content in online publications, as links in digital content, and so on. Charges for digital advertising are often generated by the cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-mille (CPM). This means, respectively, that advertising revenue is paid out each time an ad is clicked, or each time an ad is viewed a thousand times.
